Jack Harkness: Jack (Jack is the name that he goes by; it is a name he adopts later
He later becomes a Time Agent working for the Time Agency, the first person from the Boeshane Peninsula to do so. While working as a Time Agent he is teamed-up with Captain John Hart, who would later fall in love with him. They are teamed together because Jack is the only one who could control him. At some point during his service with them, the Time Agency steals two years of Jack's memory, and in anger he abandons them to became a con man.
While running a con on Earth during World War II, Jack poses as an American volunteer in the Royal Air Force. He wears the uniform of a Group Captain and adopts the name "Captain Jack Harkness" from an actual dead American volunteer officer. Jack uses an "alien warship" as bait to draw a Time Agent in to try to buy the ship. He knows that a bomb is going to be dropped on the ship,
destroying it before the buyer can take delivery. So Jack gets his money and the buyer gets nothing. While flying to Earth, however, the ship is picked up by the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler. They follow it to London. Unknown to Jack, the ship is filled with nanogenes. Once released, they threaten to remake all humans they come in contact with into the shape of the first human they came in contact with, a child killed in a bombing while wearing a gasmask. After they Doctor reunites the child with his mother and heals everyone else, they are all saved by Captain Jack. He uses his ship to capture the falling bomb that would have destroyed the ship, and killed the others, and flies it off into space. The bomb is about to explode when the Doctor and Rose arrive in the TARDIS and carry him away with them.
The Doctor, Jack, and Rose go on many adventures together before they were taken from the TARDIS via a powerful trans-mat beam and sent to Satelite 5. Each is placed in a future equivalent of a present day reality show. It soon appears that those players who get "voted off" are actually being killed. After it looks like Rose is disintegrated, Jack uses the sensors in the TARDIS to read that the beam was not killing the players, but was sending them out into space. At the location where the beam went, Jack finds out who is behind everything that hads been happening at Satelite 5 for the past 100 years. There is a hidden Dalek fleet. After saving Rose and facing the Dalek Emperor, the group returns to Satelite 5 where a battle with soon rages. The Doctor sends Rose to the present to escape the battle while he and Jack stay. As things go badly and jack is killed, Rose returns after having looked into the heart of the TARDIS. Having absorbed the the time vortex, Rose uses her new power to destroy the Daleks and to return Jack to life. The Doctor draws the power out of Rose and they both leave. Jack comes in just in time to see the TARDIS dematerialize and realizes he has been left behind.
Jack manages to get himself back to Earth in the year 1869 by using a Vortex Manipulator. Shortly after his arrival, he is captured by two female members of Torchwood- Alice Guppy and Emily Holroyd - who have noticed his immortality and his numerous references in public to the Doctor. They examine him, which includes attempting to kill him. Jack recognizes that the technology being used during the interrogation is more advanced than Earth technology of the time. They identify themselves as being Torchwood members and offer Jack a job. Jack initially declines the offer learning that they view the Doctor as a threat. He agrees to the assignment after being told that if he doesn't cooperate he will be treated as a threat himself. He takes an assignment which is to capture an alien. While they have the alien in a small cell one of the officers pulls out a gun and shoots the alien in the head without warning. Jack disagrees with this policy and refuses the next assignment they try to assign him. Jack goes to a bar when a young female fortune teller comes to his table and offers to read his cards. After ignoring his refusal, she tells Jack that he will meet the Doctor again...but not for another century. Needing something to do with himself until then, he returns to Torchwood and opts to join as an employee.
Initially their prisoner, Jack was appalled by Torchwood's brutal methods. Under threats of torture and realizing that he would have to wait for over a century to meet up with the Doctor again, Jack agrees to join Torchwood and is contracted as a freelance agent for the organization. He served at the Cardiff branch of Torchwood, Torchwood Three, until 2000. After a suicidal when after the rest of the team were killed by a suicidal team member, he became the leader and began to hire a new team.
In 2006, when Torchwood One was destroyed in the Battle of Canary Wharf between the Daleks and the Cybermen, Jack went down to sort out the debris and begin reconstruction. He reformed the new Torchwood, basing it on new principles about protecting the human race and doing good as opposed to the old principles of protecting the British Empire that the Torchwood Institute had had since its founding by Queen Victoria. He also severed the links between the different Torchwood groups, focusing on his role as leader of Torchwood Three.

In 2007 he encounters the TARDIS again after it stops over in Cardiff. Once aboard, he meets the Tenth Doctor and his new companion, Martha Jones. Together, they battle the Master who, in an alternate time line, manages tot ake over the Earth. Eventually defeating him, and changing time so that The Master's reign of power never occurred, Jack returns to his normal post as leader of Torchwood Three. As he says goodbye to the Doctor and Martha Jack makes a cryptic statement that may hint to the fact that he and the mysterious Face of Boe may be one and the same.
In 2008, Jack is kidnapped by Captain John Hart, who is acting under orders from Jack's younger brother Gray, and transported to Cardiff in the year 27 AD. John explains that he has not been acting of his own will, showing Jack that his wristband has been molecularly bonded with his skin (rendering it unremovable) and equipped with surveillance and remote detonation circuits to ensure his obedience. Gray, who has suffered a lifetime of torture, has returned with a vendetta against Jack. He orders John to bury Jack in the ground, which he does. John tricks Gray, however, by giving Jack a tracking device. Jack lay buried under Cardiff, kept alive by his immortality, for around 1900 years. In 1901, Jack was unburied by members of Torchwood Three who are shocked that they now have two versions of Jack, one working for them, another found alive after being buried deep underground. They place the newly unearthed version of Jack into a cryogenic chamber in the morgue to prevent his two selves meeting. They set an alarm and he is awakened in 2008. Jack re-emerges from his sleep saying he forgives Gray and asks for his brother to do the same. Gray refuses to absolve him, so Jack sorrowfully chloroforms his younger brotherand places him inside a cryogenic chamber, knowing he may never awake.

no ship. It is detected, however, by someone else, the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler. His con, selling the "alien warship", which is actually an alien ambulance, goes wrong and he is unwittingly responsible for releasing a "plague". After the Doctor cures this "plague", which was nano-genes trying to rewrite human DNA, Jack redeems himself by displacing an unexploded bomb, which was about to destroy the alien ambulence and kill everyone around. As a result, his own ship is destoyed. He then joins the Doctor on the TARDIS as one of his companions. Under the influence of The Doctor, Jack reformed his former ways becoming a more moral character. While battling alongside the Doctor on Satellite 5 in the year 200,100, Jack is killed by the Daleks. He is resurrected by Rose Tyler who, at the time, had absorbed all the power of the time vortex. As a result of this, Jack was made immortal. The Doctor, feeling uneasy at having an immortal around with him, leaves Jack on Satellite 5.
