Nestene Consciousness:
The Nestene are among the oldest beings in the universe. An extraterrestrial, disembodied intelligence, they are said to have existed in the "Dark Times", along with the Racnoss, the Great Vampires and the Carrionites. Eventually, they sought to invade the Earth. Arriving on Earth in hollow plastic meteorites, they used Autons, humanoid, plastic
figures resembling mannequins, for their grunt work and more human-looking Autons to replace key government figures. Their plans were ultimately thwarted by U.N.I.T. with the help of Doctor #3. He also destroyed their invasion leader who was in the form of a multi-tentacled cephalopod.
The Nestene subsequently returned with a new ally, the Master. In this attempt, the Nestene made use of more everday items, animating plastic toys, inflatable chairs and artificial flowers, in addition to their Auton servants. The Doctor convinced the Master that the Nestene were too dangerous to be reliable allies. Together they reversed the radio beam the invasion force was travelling on and sent them back into space.
The Nestenes infiltrated Earth once more, this time using warp shunt technology. It was revealed that the Nestene lost their food supply in a war, believed but not proven to be the Last Great Time War, that cause their protein planets to rot. Their intent was to overthrow and destroy the human race because Earth, with it's smoke, oil and various pollutants, was ideal for their consumption needs. Doctor #9 eventually defeated them when a vial of his "anti-plastic" solution spilled into the vat of molten plastic, which held the main bulk of the Consciousness, and it exploded.
Once again the Nestene employed the use of Autons. This time there is a realistic human facsimile that could change the shape of its features and limbs. It is established that the Nestene animate the Autons by means of telepathic projection and that when duplicate humans are made, the originals are kept alive to maintain the copy.
